The Grand Plaza area in Bayangol district is the worst polluted in
Ulaanbaatar, according to a survey by the Air Quality Office in November. The
volume of the nitric dioxide there was found to be over 29 times the accepted
level, as against the 8 times in Khan-Uul district, 5 times in the nearby
Officers Palace area, and 3 times in the first micro district. Similarly the air
in the Grand Plaza area contained 28 times the accepted level of sulfur, while this
was 17 times in Khan-Uul district, 23 times in both the Officers Palace area
and the first micro district, and 9 times in the Khar–Khorin market area. The
volume of dust particles of less than 10 micron was 27 times the norm in the
first micro district, 20 times in Khar-Khorin market, and 15 times in Khan-Uul
district. The Grand Plaza area was found to have 29 times the norm of dust
particles less than 2.5 micron.
