According to figures released by the Mongol Bank, 130 companies and 800 indiovidual gold miners sold 9803.3 kg of gold to it in 2009, 5,380.5 kg less than in 2008. It is widely believed that mined gold was regularly smuggled out of the country to avoid paying taxes, particularly the windfall profits tax.
