Trial in drug running case postponed

Trivial reasons continue to delay trials in cases related to trade in drugs,
human trafficking, corruption, and murder. The latest example was yesterday
when the Bayangol district court postponed until November 24 the trial of
L.Gantuul and Yo.Oyunchimeg as their lawyers were not present. The two women
are accused of being accomplices of L.Baigalmaa, who has been sentenced to a
life term in prison in China for having drugs in her possession.

Prosecutors say Gantuul and Oyunchimeg used not
only Baigalmaa, but also some other persons, to transport drugs to countries
including China, South Korea, Thailand, the
Philippines, and Bangladesh, apart from distributing them in Mongolia
itself. Baigalmaa said at her trial in China that she was an unwitting carrier
of what others had put in her bag when she traveled abroad. Now that two women
are claimed to have been discovered, an early trial is expected to reveal much
about the way the drug gang works.

Baigalmaa is not the only Mongolian in a foreign jail on drug-related charges.
An appeal court in China yesterday upheld a death sentence against Kh. Damdin.
