Submitting his report on the harvest to Prime Minister S.Batboldyesterday, Minister of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry T.Badamjunai production
of wheat this year reached 130,000 tons. It was 75,000 tons in 2005. It should
be enough to meet the entire domestic demand, and a large part of the present
harvest is also of better quality wheat, with less stickiness. The potato crop
is also enough to meet 100% of national demand. Vegetables will supply 60% of
Mongolia’s needs.
Batbold expressed his happiness that Mongolia was progressing toward
self-sufficiency in food and wanted more support for the agriculture sector. Once
internal food security was ensured, Mongolia should aim to export grain and
vegetables. Agriculture will then be as important as mining in the country’s
economy. He asked the Minister to convey his thanks to all in the agriculture sector
for their good work.
