Animals in Dornod and
Sukhbaatar aimags continue to fall victim to foot and mouth disease but its
spread is under control after adoption of several measures and spending MNT2.6
billion. Soxteen soums in the two aimags have been affected, and 22,048 or
99.7% of the 22,081 sick animals have been destroyed.  Vaccination has covered 2.4 million animals in
13 soums of Dornod, Sukhbaatar, Dornogobi and Khentii aimags and animals in nearby
aimags and Ulaanbaatar city have been medically checked.

Altogether 1584 people, 81 motorcycles, 320 auto vehicles are working to
control the outbreak.

The first case of the disease was reported in Sukhbaatar soum of Sukhbaatar
aimag on August 26.  A quarantine was
imposed but even after more than 50 days, the disease keeps spreading. There
was no general prophylactic vaccination, but it was done after the disease was
confirmed.

The National Emergency Commission allocated MNT50million on September 6 and another
MNT150 million was ordered on October 1. Several herders have complained about
the poor quality of the vaccine.
