Deputy Prime Minister M.Enkhbold, who is also head of The
National Emergency Commission (NEC), has warned of action against some
officials as, even after the NEC has spent MNT2.6 billion, the spread of the
foot and mouth disease in Dornod and Sukhbaatar aimags has not been arrested.
He was speaking at a regular meeting of the NEC yesterday. Since the NEC’s last
meeting on October 1, the disease has spread from 14 soums in these two aimags to
16. Enkhbold said he would ask the Government to take action against the Governors
of both aimags for dereliction of duty.
Latest reports say that 768 households in the 16 soums had 31,400 animals, 20,550
of which were infected, and 20,346 have been destroyed. The Chief of the
Veterinary Board, D.Orgil, has said that 1,586 individuals, 64 motorcycles, 296
auto vehicles, and 113 patrols are working, while 45 disinfecting points have
been set up. The intensity of the spread has come down, with around 200 new
cases being reported daily, instead of the 600 earlier.
The three-phase vaccination program has so far covered 2.4 million animas in 13
soums of Dornod, Sukhbaatar, Dornogobi and Khentii aimags, while 335,000 horses
and cows, and 7.1 million sheep and goats in the neighboring aimags have been
checked. International organizations have been asked to send more vaccines and
medicines. The International Atomic Energy Organization has promised to supply
500 units of vaccine, China 100,000, and Russia 600,000. The NEC will ask the Government
to pay for the vaccines, and to bear the cost of their transportation to the
aimags, after exempting them from paying custom and VAT.
