Pedestrians who violate traffic rules will be fined between
MNT100 and MNT8,000 from October 15. This
is expected to bring down the number of accidents which has reached 1,418 so far
in 2010. At 28, fatalities in pedestrian-related accidents were 68.3% of the
total fatal accidents. Also 1,120 pedestrians were injured, lightly or
seriously, and this is 67.4% of the total injuries in accidents.
The most common violations of traffic rules are when people suddenly come
before vehicles and cross a road in disregard of traffic lights. According to a
survey, 20% of pedestrians are afraid to cross a road while 57% of drivers are
afraid of erratic pedestrian behavior.
