President
Ts.Elbegdorj yesterday received members of the joint Mongolian-German archeological team working for the last two and half years
at Kharkhorin, the ancient capital of
the Mongol Empire. He heard from them how the project has been using new
techniques and technology to take pictures and measurements to recreate how
things were. They think Buddhism was the state religion in the 13th century and
also have hopes of reaching the ruined foundation of the Grand Khaan’s palace.
The President appreciated the contribution of the work to our knowledge and
understanding of Mongolian history and culture on the 13th century. Kharkhorin was
a major trade center of the time and any new find can prove significant for
world history also. He suggested holding an open discussion of the assumptions
stemming from the archeologists’ work.
