A program that began on September 5, the
Mayor’s Office hopes, will give pavements in Ulaanbaatar back to pedestrians so
that they no longer have to share streets with vehicles. The program will clear pavements of all
unauthorized encroachments, be they fences, garages, or trade stalls, to allow
people to walk free.
Nothing can be done about buildings that take
up pavement area but 215 mostly
unlicensed structures in 77 locations have been marked for removal or
dismissal, says the Chairman of the Registration Department of the Mayor’s
Office, M.Dungarmaa. Once this is done, repair of pavements will be taken up.
In the case of such obstacles which do have a
license, a way will have to be found to allow pedestrians access to some
pavement area, she said. Citizens and some organizations have expressed support
for the program and three companies have offered to build pavements with their own
funds.
