September 10  is
the 20th anniversary of the day of remembering victims of political repression.
Among those who attended a meeting organized at Chinggis Hotel by the Union of
Victims of Political Repression (UVPR) to mark the occasion were First Deputy
Prime Minister and DP Chairman N.Altankhuyag; L.Purevsuren, Advisor to the
President;  Johannes Ray of the Konrad
Adenauer Foundation;  members of many
victims’ families. UVPR leaders like D.Tsogtbaatar and Ts. Lookhuuz were also
present. Altankhuyag recalled how the repression had started some 70 years ago
and had led to the documented killing of some 35,000 citizens. Many others
suffered great physical and mental hardship, and some of them are still alive.
The number of victims is still tentative doubtful as unidentified mass graves
of monks are still being discovered.

He also recalled that the DP had apologized to victims’ descendants when it had
formed the Government for the first time in 1996. “The events of July 1, 2008
showed our democracy is still fragile and our commitment to human rights, a
civil society, and freedom weak. The DP will work for strengthening democracy
and protecting people’s rights,” he said.

The law on compensation for victims of repression was enacted by Parliament on
January 2, 1998 and so far MNT19.8 billion has been paid to 17,400 individuals
and families.
