A meeting with delegates
from all countries where the saiga antelope is found was held yesterday in
Ulaanbaatar, the first time such an international meeting took place in
Mongolia. It was jointly organized by the Committee of the Convention of
Migrating Species (CMS), the Convention of International Trade of Endangered
Species (CITES), and the Ministry of Nature and Tourism of Mongolia.

More than 40 delegates from
Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, China, Russia, and Kazakhstan exchanged views and
information, submitted reports on work done, and discussed future policy.
Several agreements are likely to be signed before the meeting ends on September
10. The conservation of the endangered saiga antelope has been discussed in
annual meetings since 2006.
