A meeting of the National Emergency Commission (NEC) on
September 5, called to discussed the situation arising from the foot-and-mouth
disease observed in Sukhbaatar and Dornod aimags, heard P.Damdindorj, Chief of
Veterinary and Breeding, submit a status report. The first to be infected were
three cows on August 29. The disease then spread to 30 sheep and goat in
Sukhbaatar aimag, and since then the infection has been spreading steadily. Several
antelope deaths have been noticed and their carcasses need to be destroyed without
delay.
The
NEC has ordered quarantine to be imposed, extensive disinfection work to begin,
and blood samples to be sent to a laboratory in Russia. It has asked for help
from the military wherever required. It has also allocated MNT50 million for the
work in the two aimags and another MNT10 million to provide disinfectant
material and disinfecting equipment to Sukhbaatar.
