A former advisor of President Ts. Elbegdorj, Ts.Oyungerel
was elected head of the Democratic Women’s Association on September 4, in
succession to B.Delgermaa, a former MP and a leading politician, who decided to
step down after seven year in the job. The meeting of the women’s wing of the
Democratic Party was attended by 650 delegates, 74% of whom were young.

The DP National Committee sent a list of names from whom the
women’s wing was to choose its head. Ts.Bayarmaa and L.Narmandakh did not wish
to contest, and J.Erdenechimeg was absent. 
Ts.Oyungerel polled more votes than S.Odontuya and G.Baigalmaa after
each had presented her program to the members and answered questions on them.
All said they supported the gender equality law, more women’s participation in
politics, a larger quota of women candidates for election to Parliament and other
people’s representative assemblies.
