A Japanese-Mongolian
research project called “Script” to study nomadic culture and civilization has
found birch-bark manuscripts in the Khar Bukh ruin in Bulgan province and also
a stone sculpture with inscriptions in the ancient Khyatan script in Dornogobi
province. Both items will be restored. The team that found them included
Professor A.Ochir, Dr. L.Erdenebold, and Professors K.Matsuda, H.Muraoka and
T.Matsukawa.

The sculpture is 183 cm high
and 53 cm wide with seven rows of writing in the Khyatan script. Preliminary
studies reveal it was made on August 1,1058. It is the first ever sculpture
found where this script is seen.
