Following the
publication of a news story in News.mn on how hundreds of people live in the
Ulaanchuluut garbage dump, even giving birth and raising babies, the
President’s Office and an NGO have taken up a project to provide education to
children there. The President’s adviser on Human Rights and Civil
Participation, Ch.Sosormaa, and NGO for Children plan to run a center to teach
more than 50 children who live and work in the dump. Most of them have never attended school and
some others have dropped out. There are even children who have been collecting
garbage for the past 7-8 years.
At present parents
and children are being surveyed to ascertain their needs and priorities so that
the specific type of education to be provided can be determined. Plans are also
being made to find jobs for some parents. A meeting to discuss the project will
be held on August 24. NGOs and others who work for the rights of children have
been invited to attend it.
