More than 30,000 students
come to Ulaanbaatar each year from the countryside and stay in dormitories. Only
about half of the about 90 universities and institutes they attend have their
own dormitory, so many thousands of students have to make their own
arrangements.
The Ministry of Education,
Culture and Science has announced new guidelines for dormitories, following
suggestions submitted by the Mongolian Students’ Union. The Standards
Organization will now prepare the standards to be followed from this academic
year. These will apply to kitchen facilities, laundry rooms, number of toilets according
to how many male and female students will use them, steps for disabled
students, outdoor recreation facilities, and Internet for every room. Every
student must have four square meters of space.
