During his recent visit to
Japan, Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy D.Zorigt pleaded for the
governments of the two countries to create opportunities for more collaboration,
in both the public and the private sectors. During his meeting with Yo.Nakagaki,
president of “JGOAL” organization at the Ministry of Economy, Trade
and Industry, Zorigt explained the goals of the mineral resource and energy
sectors of Mongolia.
JGOAL had conducted studies
in eastern Mongolia and in Baganuur and Shivee-Ovoo coal mines in 2004-2005. It
has been training coal specialists from Mongolia and intends to continue with
the program. JGOAL would also consider investing in Mongolia and introduce new
technology there.
The Minister also met the
head of the Agency of Natural Resources and Energy at the Ministry of Economy,
Trade and Industry to share views on exploitation and development of the Tavantolgoi
mineral deposit.
Zorigt spoke at a seminar organized
by the Economic Research Center at the Nikkei daily on the Mongolian mining
policy and Mongolia-Japan relations. He referred to the increasing contribution
of the mining sector to Mongolia”s economy over in recent years. In 2009, the
mining sector accounted for 22.1 per cent of the GDP, 65.4 per cent of the
total industrial production, and 80 per cent of exports. Later, he answered
questions on the economy and the mining sector. He was also interviewed by Nikkei.
