Last month the South Korean Embassy in Mongolia instroduced measures to simplify visa requirements. Among the measures implemented was providing several more bank accounts for the set-period deposit for visa applicants. In addition the amount, which had been MNT 10-20 million, was reduced to 7-14 million. As a result of such changes, the number of visa applicants has risen by 60%.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also informed that the numbers of the illegal immigrants, whose visa extension have terminated, is increasing. They have noted that currently 35,000 Mongolian citizens are in South Korea. Before the visa simplification measures were introduced, approximately 10 people were registered as illegal immigrants each month; in October 2015 this number shot to 270.
