A
statue of freedom fighter and governor of Khotgoid, Chingunjav (1710-1757) was
erected in Murun city of Khuvsgul province yesterday. It is the work of
sculptor A.Ochirbold and shows Chingunjav on a galloping horse, wearing a coat
of armor, and carrying a bow and arrows, and a sword. He is shown as bearing a
demand letter to the Manchu king.

The
Mongolian Government has decided to celebrate the 300
th anniversary
of Chingunjav’s birth. The Organizing Committee is led by Prime Minister
S.Batbold. He attended the opening ceremony of the statue. Murun city’s main
road and square have been named after Chingunjav.

Chingunjav
was a leader of Khotgoits, an Oirad tribe, located in north-western Mongolia.
He was a descendant of Chinggis Khaan and served the Manchu emperor Chien Lung.
Aggrieved by the failure of the emperor to reply to a complaint from him,  General Chingunjav left the Manchu army with
his Mongol troops and raised the banner of revolt.
