Yesterday, the Legal Standing Committee had a closed meeting. During this meeting the officials discussed whether to discuss “Amnesty Law” in a Parliament or not. We received some answers from the director of the Legal Standing Committee, D.Ganbat.

• What decisions were made at the closed meeting?

• The Legal Standing Committee discussed the draft “Amnesty Law” today. The members agreed to discuss the project in the Parliament as a majority rule.

• How many prisoners will be involved in the amnesty?

• Currently, about 8000 prisoners are serving prison sentences and about 1000 suspects are being held. Once the “Amnesty Law” has been passed, between 2000 and 4000 prisoners will be released or their time in prison will be reduced. There are many rumors that “previous law was too “prison oriented” of to fill Mongolia’s is Jails etc”. We must correct these mistakes. Therefore, we will discuss “Criminal Offence Law” immediately according to proper procedures.
