The Mongolian Parliament will discuss joining the “Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons” in the near future. This Council of Europe convention deals with legal aid, extradition and the social rehabilitation of citizens of countries which have ratified the convention. Under the convention, people convicted of a crime will be enabled to serve their sentence in their home countries. As Mongolian foreign relations continue to develop; more Mongolians than ever before are living, studying, and working abroad. Therefore, the Government is working closely with the countries, which Mongolians visit. In this context, Mongolia already has bilateral agreements regarding the provision of legal aid with seven countries.
In 1978, Mongolia joined the Berlin Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons and continues to remain so. Therefore, Mongolia has been undertaking extradition and related issues through its Diplomatic Missions with the countries, which are not part of this convention.
