Although Mongolia is a country with a free market economy, even today, energy prices are established by the state.
Power plants have put forward a proposal to raise prices, but in response to public protests energy prices have been forced down by the state.
The Government of Mongolia is aiming to liberalize energy prices starting from the 1st of July. Energy prices will be increased and the debt and liability between power stations and coal mines will be eliminated while a new system will be put in place.
