As of today, there are a total of 333 suspected cases of scarlet fever in Mongolia, but only 95 have been confirmed by laboratory analysis, including 22 adults, some of whom are doctors and medical workers.
The first case was reported on March 18, 2015, when a patient exhibiting symptoms of the bacterial disease was admitted to the hospital.
A press conference was organized by the Ministry of Health and Sports in response to the outbreak, and attended by Vice Minister of the Ministry of Health and Sport D. Atarmaa and Resident Representative of the World Health Organization Soe Nyunt-U.
Cases of scarlet fever have not been documented in Mongolia since 2010, and Mongolia was granted a certificate for the elimination of this disease.
In order to reduce the spread of this illness, public health experts suggest vaccinations for children from the ages of six months to five years old.
As reported by the Deputy Minister of Health and Sports, Mongolia's patient zero is thought to be a student who returned to Mongolia from study abroad.
The Resident Representative of the World Health Organization, suggested that the outbreak here may be related to the recent outbreak China, and that medical samples have been sent to Hong Kong for verification.
