Foreign investment has decreased day by day, and as of February of this year, it has reached a negative balance.
The peak of foreign direct investment in Mongolia was in 2011. At that time, foreign investment in Mongolia reached 4.6 billion USD. In 2012 it was 4.4 billion USD, however, in 2013 total foreign investment decreased by 50 percent and reached less than 2.1 billion USD, and by the end of 2014 it fell to 542 million USD.
Economists have been concerned about the decrease of foreign investment and drawn attention to several factors which have influenced the decline, primarily the legal environment in the county. There have been many critics who have pointed out that the legal environment of Mongolia has pushed away foreign investment instead of attracting it.
Analysts say that we should always remember why political parties come together and share powers and authority, and we should remember this every day, otherwise the economy will face continued struggles.
Political and economic leaders suggest that if foreign investment does not increase this year, there should be no anticipation or expectation that it will recover next year.
