Speaker D.Demberel
feels that a strong opposition is essential for Parliament to work with a
purpose, to debate issues fairly and to monitor the performance of the
Government. The principal parties could seek help from a smaller party but
their decision to form a coalition has diminished the significance and
importance of Parliament.
Demberel feels it has
become difficult for Parliament to take independent decisions as many MPs from
both parties are in the Government . The priorities of the Government are too
powerful for Parliament to dispute or ignore, but this concentration of power in
the hands of the Government does not forward the cause of democracy.
