Reports published in several South Korean media and local sources claim former president of Mongolia and head of the Mongolian People`s Revolutionary Party (MPRP) N.Enkhbayar and his family seek political asylum from the South Korea. These reports have caused a heated debate in social media. MPRP declined the reports about former president seeking political asylum during a press conference on Monday. MPRP officials wanted precise information about the source of those claims and approached the South Korean Embassy in Mongolia to comment on the matter.
MPRP member MP O Baasankhuu commented on the matter stating, “In the case of changing citizenship, a citizen would first apply for this request in his own country. Reports about former president seeking political asylum is suspected to have a political motive. We will focus on the issue.” The former president himself has yet to comment on the reports.
