Mongolia ranked 16th place in Incheon Asian Games

The 17th Incheon Asian Games has been held in Incheon, South Korea between September 19 and October 4th.

The quadrennial Asian Games represented over 12,000 athletes from 45 countries in 36 sporting events for a total of 439 medals awarded.

Out of the 45 countries, 37 received medals. China led the pack with 151 gold, 108 silver and 83 bronze awards. South Korea, Japan, Kazakhstan and Iran took the next top five slots. Indonesia, the newly granted country to host the 18th Asian Games in 2018, claimed 4 gold, 5 silver and 20 bronze medals.

Mongolia, with a national team totaling 234, ranked 16th place among 45 countries with 5 gold, 4 silver and 12 bronze medals.

The Mongolian Judo team is currently ranked 5th place behind Japan and South Korea with their success in receiving 3 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze medals. G.Boldbaatar, B.Duurenbileg, G.Odbayar grabbed silver medals and L.Otgonbayar, N.Dagvasuren, D.Sumiya, Ts.Naranjargal won bronze medals, all becoming World Champions.

For Judo, the other gold medal holders are Beijing Olympic champion N.Tuvshinbayar in the men`s 100 kg weight division, two-time silver medalist World Youth Champion D.Tumurkhulug in the men`s 66 kg weight division, and World Champion M.Urantsetseg in the women`s 48 kg weight division.

The Mongolian Freestyle team has been granted silver and bronze medals. Silver medals were won by IM S.Byambatseren in the women`s 55 kg, World Champion silver medalist B.Nomin in the men`s 57 kg, Asian Champion D.Khuderbulga in the men`s 97 kg, World Youth Champion S.Tserenchimed in the women`s 63 kg and World Champion`s silver and two-time bronze medalist O.Burmaa in the women`s 75 kg event.

The Mongolian shooting team made a huge success as Ch.Narantuya wins gold in Women's 50m Rifle Prone Individual with 624.1 and brought the fourth gold medal to the Mongolian national team in Incheon. This is the first time a Mongolian female athlete wins at the Asian Games in shooting.

Mongolia made other headlining news as well. In the Boxing event, Mongolian boxer D.Otgandalai survived a final round and won gold in the men`s 60 kg. This is the first gold medal for Mongolia in Boxing at the Asian Games. The Mongolian female boxer IM M.Nandintsetseg brings home the first medal in the women`s 51 kg. On the final days of the Asian Games Mongolian Tae Kwon Do team grabbed a bronze medal. This is also the first medal by the Mongolian Tae Kwon Do team from the Asian Games.

The national team of Mongolia has participated in the Asian Games since the 7th Asian Games in Tehran of 1974, that year Mongolia received two gold, two silver and five bronze medals. Since then, the Mongolian national team has seized a total of 14 gold medals from the Asian Games with three of those gold medals awarded from the New Delhi 1982 Asian Games alone. In Incheon, that record was yet again broken with 5 gold medals. The Mongolian national team now holds a total of 19 gold medals from the Asian Games.
