Ulaanbaatar City Mayor E.Bat-Uul suggested cooperation with Japan's Mitsubishi Motors Corp on the introduction of 100 percent electric vehicles to help reduce air pollution in the city.
Mitsubishi Motors Japan donated two electric cars for trial use by Ulaanbaatar City Administration last June, in return for feedback from the Ulaanbaatar City Mayor. During the test period, electric charging of the vehicles was estimated to cost 60,000 MNT per month.
Mitsubishi Motors Japan presented a third car to Ulaanbaatar City Administration today. At the ceremony, Ulaanbaatar City Mayor E.Bat-Uul, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Mongolia Takenori Shimizu, and Manager General of Mitsubishi Motors Japan's North Asian Office Yoichi Shimizu were present.
Ulaanbaatar City Mayor E.Bat-Uul said, “We use the cars in tests in order to reduce vehicle emissions that contribute greatly to air pollution, and to save taxpayer money. The two cars donated by Mitsubishi were used for public service during Naadam festival and got a positive welcome from public. People hardly believe that the monthly electricity costs for an electric car is 60,000 MNT. We will see if this car suits Mongolia's harsh winter conditions this winter. If the test sees successful results, Ulaanbaatar City Administration will provide all agencies with electric cars. I believe we will save much taxpayer money. I want to say that I will drive this car personally.”
