Mongolian judokas performed well at the 2014 World Judo Championships held at Tractor Ice Arena in Chelyabinsk, Russia, from August 24th-31st.
A total of 639 judokas from 110 countries featured strong competition at the 2014 WJC. Some West African athletes withdrew from the WJC as the results of discrimination they faced due to the spread of the ebola virus in West Africa.
The Mongolian national men's and women's teams of each 9 successfully participated in the 2014 WJC. On the first day of the tournament, Mongolian judoka G.Boldbaatar (men's 60 kg) seized the gold medal and national judo team was ranked 6th among the teams from 110 countries. D.Sumiya ranked 5th in the women's 57 kg event on the final day. The Mongolian national women's team claimed the silver medal, leaving Kazakhstan, Cuba and Poland behind. In the final round, the women's judo team competed against France for the gold but lost with 2:3.
The Mongolian team is one of the few teams going home with a gold medal. The 2014 WJC host country's Russian team was ranked 11th, with two silver and six bronze wins.
The 2015 WJC will be held in Astana, Kazakhstan.
