Member of Parliament and Minister of Environment and Green Development of Mongolia, S.Oyun, was elected on Monday as the President of the newly established U.N. Environmental Assembly at the first-ever United Nations Environmental Assembly that opened in Kenya on June 23rd.

Over 150 high-level delegations at the UNEA elected the President with a solid vote.  In 2012 the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), the international community decided to strengthen and upgrade UNEP, including the establishment of universal membership in the Governing Council. As a follow up to this decision, the Governing Council held its first session with universal membership in February 2013, where countries agreed to rename the Governing Council as the “United Nations Environment Assembly of the UNEP” (UNEA).

At the weeklong United Nations Environmental Assembly, delegates from UN member countries are discussing matters surrounding the legal state of the environment, financial mechanisms for green development, illegal wildlife trade, environmental sustainable consumption, sustainable development that support industries, and development targets from 2015.

Mongolian delegates lead by the newly elected President of UNEA S.Oyun are introducing measures for nature and the environment taken by the Mongolian Government and sharing experiences about the new Partnership for Action on Green Economy, which is being implemented on the United Nations` initiative.
