Today World Environment Day is being celebrated globally.
In 1972, the United Nations General Assembly established the day to raise global awareness of environmental issues and to help stimulate political attention, public action, and personal commitment to environmental preservation.
Since that day, UN member countries have observed World Environment Day by launching big campaigns to protect the environment under various themes.
In 2013, World Environment Day was marked under the theme of “"Think.Eat.Save". This year Mongolia is celebrating World Environment Day with theme of “Good choices and smart consumption”.
On World Environment Day, the Ministry of Environment and Green Development is organizing a number of events including a Flash Mob among students of vocational training schools, universities and colleges on Chinggis Khaan Square between 12.00 pm and 2.30 pm. Also planned for the day is a scientific conference on “Mongolians` culture and tradition of protecting the environment in modern day”, the opening of the documentary “Exit” that shows the impacts of infrastructure projects to wildlife at Tengis movie theatre at 6.00 pm, and the opening of the photo exhibition “Biological diversity Мongolica-2013” at the Zanabazar Museum of Fine Arts.
