The President of Mongolia, Ts.Elbegdorj, issued a decree announcing that the National Day for Tree Planting will be held on the second Saturday every May and October.

This spring the National Day for Tree Planting falls on Saturday May 10th.  The Ministry of Finance has called for public participation for nature rehabilitation and green development by lending a helping hand and planting trees. Mongolians say that planting a tree is a lifetime charity and planting two trees is charity for the next life. Thus tree planting is something that everyone must do.

Mongolia is an agricultural and pasture country where almost 13,0357.7 thousands hectares (ha) or 83.4 percent out of 156.65 million (ha) of territory is occupied by agriculture and pasture land while forest land represents only 18,292.0  or 11.6 percent of the territory.

Mongolia became a partner country of the UN-REDD Programme (United Nations Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries) in 2011 and is now working to develop a national REDD+ roadmap. Mongolia is struggling to shift from a “Brown” to a “Green” economy.
