In March, Shigeru and Sakie Yokota, the parents of Megumi, who was abducted to North Korea in 1977, met with her North Korean-born daughter, Kim Eun Gyong, for the first time ever. The meeting took place in the Mongolian capital of Ulan Bator.
During their meeting over lunch at the prime minister”s office, Abe also asked Elbegdorj for Mongolia”s continued cooperation in resolving the issue of Japanese nationals kidnapped by North Korea, according to informed sources.
Mongolia is an ally of North Korea and also has a good relationship with Japan.
When Elbegdorj visited Japan last September, Abe, in a very unusual move, invited the Mongolian leader to his private residence in Tokyo”s Shibuya Ward for a one-hour meeting.
