
Before beginning the Haru Basho, the Grand Sumo Spring Tournament, the Japan Sumo Association pledged to promote the highest rank of ōzeki Kakuryu M.Anand the highest rank yokozuna in an assembly if he finished the tournament with 13 wins or more. Kakuryu M.Anand is was successful in winning 14 bouts and lost only one fight.
New Yokozuna Kakuryu M.Anand confronted Ozeki Kotoshigiku, who had previously thrown out Yokozuna Hakuho M.Davaajargal and Yokozuna Harumafuji D.Byambadorj respectively on the closing days. But Kakuryu came out on top and forced out his opponent.
In the top division of the Grand Sumo Spring Tournament, nine Mongolian national sumo wrestlers competed. Grand Champion Hakuho M.Davaajargal and Yokozuna Harumafuji D.Byambadorj finished the Haru Basho each with 12 wins and 3 loses. On the closing day of the tournament, the two fought each other and Harumafuji defeated Hakuho.
Tamawashi moved to maegashira to finish the tournament with five wins and 10 loses while the elder sumo wrestler Kyokutenho N.Tsevegnyam finished the tournament with nine wins and six loses.
The other Mongolian national sumo wrestlers finished with the following results: Terunofuji G.Gan-Erdene (8-7), Azamaryu S.Todbileg (6-9), Takanoiwa A.Baasandorj (10-5), Kagamio B.Nanjid (5-10). Mongolian sumo wrestlers have done very well in 61 Basho out of 68 in the period between 2002-2014.
