The hunting of wild animals including the wolf, fox, corsac fox and marmot has been banned for three years from now according to a decision of the Ministry of Environment and Green Development.

The population of the above wild animals that feed on and control the numbers of pasture pests and rodents, including the field mouse and rat, have vastly reduced in recent years.

The Ministry of Environment and Green Development has therefore extended the ban on wild animal hunting for three years in order to control the number of the pests using natural methods.

The steppe wolf in Khentii, Dornod and Sukhbaatar aimag has almost vanished due to poachers. This is where an outbreak of the infectious disease foot and mouth occurred and is the main territory of the Mongolian antelope habitat. Therefore the hunting of wolves in Khentii, Dornod and Sukhbaatar has been banned for three years in order to save the wolves and control the number of pests and rodents.

The governors of the provinces have been obliged to improve local wildlife management and focus on the count of the wolves during this period.

In 2012, the hunting of marmot was banned for 5 years by the order of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism.

There was a ban until January 2014 on the hunting of foxes, corsac foxes and wolves in Bayantumen, Bulgan, Gurvanzagal, Dashbalbar, Matad, Sergelen, Khalkhgol, Khulunbuir, Kherlen, Tsagaan-Ovoo, Choibalsan, Chuluunkhoroot sums in Dornod; Bayanmunkh, Bayankhutag, Bayan-Ovoo, Darkhan Delgerkhaan, Galshar, Murun in Khentii aimag; and Asgat, Bayandelger, Dariganga, Munkhkhaan, Naran, Ongon, Tuvshinshiree, Tumentsogt, Uulbayan, Khalzan, Sukhbaatar and Erdenetsagaan sums in Sukhbaatar aimag. The ban has been extended for a further three years.
