Peacekeepers leave for mission in Darfur

The fifth shift of the Mongolian peacekeeping contingent is to leave today for their mission. Mongolian peacekeepers showed their respect on Friday to the military flag of the Mongolian Armed Forces at Aldar sport committee before leaving for the peacekeeping operations in Darfur, North Sudan. Their mission is to assist ordinary civilians and the second shift of field hospital officers under the United Nations and African Union Mission in Darfur.

At the farewell ceremony, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary from Mongolia to the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, O.Dambiinyam, the Deputy Chief of General Staff, Mongolian Armed Forces Major General B. Bayarmagnai and Mongolian peacekeepers` families and friends were present.

The fifth shift of the Mongolian peacekeeping contingent will leave for North Sudan today on January 6th. Lieutenant-colonel J.Gankhuyag and lieutenant-colonel S.Purevdorj were appointed to command the fifth shift to represent 17 units of Defense and Law Enforcement Staff Hospital, the Court Decision Enforcement General Office, the General Police Department and Mongolian Armed Forces.

In this shift 31 out of 68 deployed peacekeepers are women. Mongolian peacekeepers have been deployed for missions since December 2010 along with peacekeepers from Rwanda, Jordan, South Africa, Senegal, Egypt, Gambia, Sierra-Leon and Tanzania to assist ordinary civilians and field hospital officers in Darfur in North Sudan.
