Those employees expressed disbelief, disappointment, confusion and anger at the sudden and unexpected decision by the MAXAM Explosives LLC.
The employees of the services provider company to Oyutolgoi delivered request of pay increase and job evaluation in workplace to the board of the MAXAM Explosives LLC on Friday December 13th. And the board of the company was given 5 working days to respond. On Tuesday employees of the MAXAM Explosives LLC went on a strike as the company failed to respond to their request in 5 working days. The employees were asked time to negotiate until next Friday by the MAXAM Explosives LLC. But the employees discovered that they were fired when they arrived in the work place at 05.30 am on Wednesday December 18th. Those employees ID cards were taken.
The employees who is paid monthly 800,000 for work in unbearable, unusual condition included heat, noise, darkness, humidity and explosives requested pay increase and job evaluation.
Fired employees were delivered from Oyutolgoi campus to Ulaanbaatar by a plane on Wednesday December 18th. A subsidiary of MAXAM, MAXAM Explosives began its work in Mongolia in 2006 signing two major contracts in the country, one with Oyu Tolgoi and the other with SouthGobi Sands. MAXAM Explosives serves as the blasting products and services provider to Oyu Tolgoi.
