The UN General Assembly recognized the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10th in 1948 proclaiming the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world is to form a basis for rights of all members of the human family.
It was first observed on December 10th that year and has been observed each year on the same date for the 63 following years. Human Rights Day is a global observance and not a public holiday. Events focusing on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights are held worldwide on and around December 10th under a call initiated by the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
In 2013, Human Rights Day is observed under the theme of “20 years working for your rights”.
