
The Secretary-General of Mongolian National Commission for UNESCO, G.Jargalsaikhan delivered a speech saying “I want to thank the committee members who made the decision for giving the world such an opportunity to recognize Mongolian heritage, as well as to those great Mongolian scholars, wise men of letters, artists and associations. I believe that the synergy of the Mongolian state and ordinary civilians will do more to protect and preserve such a great heritage to transmit it to the next generation.”
The Committee considered the application of ten new nominations for the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding and approved to register cultural heritage elements of Mongolia, Azerbaijan, Guatemala and Uganda during the 8th session of the Intergovernmental Committee meeting in Baku.
The traditional Mongolian script writing method or Mongolian calligraphy is the fifth heritage element that have been added to the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in need of urgent safeguarding.
The 8th yearly meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Heritage will continue in Baku until December 7th.
The Committee meeting for UNESCO’s Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage adopted in 2003 was represented by 157 state parties. Mongolian delegates lead by the Secretary-General of Mongolian National Commission for UNESCO, G.Jargalsaikhan went to represent Mongolia.
At the Committee meeting the Mongolian heritage of “Traditional craft and etiquette of the Mongol ger”, which was also nominated to the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage, will be considered too.
