Mongolia has submitted once again another item to be added. The traditional script writing method, or Mongolian calligraphy, is being considered for inscription on the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
An official close to the matter says it is still too early to tell whether the nomination of the Mongolian calligraphy to the UNESCO list has been successful.
Public awareness and participation is a very important factor in the nomination and subsequent acceptance of an item onto the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Participation of communities, groups and individuals and consent is required in the nomination process at all stages by the criterion. According to the 2003 Convention, intangible heritages can only be identified with reference to communities, groups or individuals that recognize the nominated item as a part of their cultural heritage. Thus it is important to identify clearly one or several communities, groups or individuals concerned with the nominated Mongolian calligraphy.
