Currently Mongolia has 11 heritage items including khuumii, reed pipe, the long throat song, the horse head fiddle that are ingrained with tradition culture and customs and have been inscribed to the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in need of urgent safeguarding.

Mongolia has once again submitted an item to be registered; the traditional script writing method and Mongolian calligraphy for inscription on the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
An official close to the matter said that it is still too early to tell if the nomination of Mongolian calligraphy to the UNESCO list is successful.

Public awareness and participation in the inscription of calligraphy on the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage is still very important. Participation and awareness is required as is the participation of communities, groups and individuals and consent in the nomination process at all stages according to the Criterion.

According to the 2003 Convention, an intangible heritage can only be identified with reference to communities, groups or individuals that recognize it as part of their cultural heritage. Thus it is important to identify clearly one or several communities, groups or individuals concerned with the nominated element, namely the traditional Mongolian calligraphy.
