Prominent public figures, writers and scientists of Mongolia have called for a ban on the removal of historical or other cultural value statues, features and name changes of landmarks such as Sukhbaatar Square. They have delivered an appeal letter to the Government today on October 2nd.

The leading figures of Mongolia have demanded the restoration of the name of the landmark Sukhbaatar Square that has been changed to Chinggis Square according to the resolution by the Ulaanbaatar City Citizens Representatives Khural last July.

The appeal letter included the following  six points regarding the changes to historically unique features in Ulaanbaatar:

1. To cancel the resolution by the Ulaanbaatar City Citizens Representatives Khural that changed the name of the central square in Ulaanbaatar City. The hasty resolution was only made by seven authorities of the Ulaanbaatar City Citizens Representatives Khural without any research or announcement to the public.

2. To reinstall V.I.Lenin`s statue in its rightful place in Ulaanbaatar due to its  historical, artistic and political value and promote the background of the feature via media.

3. If the City Authority has a plan to remove Damdin Sukhbaatar’s statue, or make changes to the name, date or traditions of the National Celebration Naadam, reject the plan and announce the rejection publicly to erase public anger.

4. To set a standard for place, hight or rank of statue and monuments of historic figures based on a scientific basis, create a commission consisting of experts who must be obliged to make suggestions to authorities.

5. To cooperate with political parties and NGOs agreeing not to invade intangible cultural assets built in any period of the history of Mongolia and announce changes publicly.

6. To consider scientists, experts and public views when discussing issues on politics, society and culture.
