Efforts have been made this year to improve the environment of Ulaanbaatar city for the health and well being of it”s citizens and for the influx of foreign visitors. Grass, flowers and shrubs have been planted across the city to give a greener image. The city authorities are giving a great significance to the establishment of green spaces in the city for example the floral ger on the central square.

The director of the City Landscaping Department of Ulaanbaatar City D.Enkhsaikhan stated that “a total of 4.5 billion MNT has been budgeted for the whole greening of the Capital City, whereas 315 million MNT was spent on floral decorations”. This year around 450 gardeners from over 30 companies have been planting shrubs and grass in a total area of 45,000m² and flowerbeds in about 5000m² in 24 locations across the city.

Further to this effort of green the city, land owners must also allocate 10 percent of their land to planting. The Ulaanbaatar City Mayor, E.Bat-Uul’s, has ordered a survey of all land owning citizens, business entites, and organizations, to see if they have planted greenery or gardens on at least 10 percent of their land.

The study took place over two months and the results showed that 80 percent of the 7,002 land-owning citizens and business entities in the Bayanzurkh, Bayangol, Songinokhairkhan, Sukhbaatar, Khan-Uul, and Chinggeltei districts had planted greenery on their land.

The remaining 20 percent had no spare land as buildings or construction encompassed te entire space. Half of these land owners will be given land at the National Garden Park, Mongol Naadam Complex, or district gardens, for planting greenery.
