The lamp lighting ceremony was first practiced in 2007 in Mongolia. Since then the lamp lighting ceremony has attracted more and more of an audience. This is the sixth year that Mongolians have practiced the annual ceremony from 2007.

This Vesakha, or the Day of Buddha”s birth, the Day of Achieving Enlightenment, and the Day of Reaching Nirvana, all fall on one day this year, May 25th. It is called Duichin Day in Mongolia, as the 3 special days fall at once on an auspicious day, the 15th day of summer according to the lunar calendar.

For this special Buddhist day a ceremony of releasing paper lamps is planned for 7:00 pm in the Central Stadium. Such an event is an international phenomenon that is popularly observed in Thailand, India, Indonesia and Mongolia.

The floating lantern events in various countries differ depending on its traditions and customs. But wherever the event is practiced it is dedicated to all good things.

There is a belief that happiness and success will come to everyone who releases a lit lantern on the day.

Buddhists believe that their wishes will come true by the positive energy of people during the event. This year the event will be held with the theme of “Wish Comes True”. Buddhists will gather to light lamps and to release them to the sky whispering their wishes.

In 1999, the United Nations resolved to internationally observe the day of Vesak at its headquarters and offices.
