The European Union on Tuesday sent USD2.5
million in aid to help Mongolia deal with the aftermath of one of the coldest
winters on record.

The EU”s executive, the European
Commission, estimates that 600,000 people – mainly nomadic herders – are in
danger of starvation after the bitter winter wiped out more than 10 per cent of
the country”s livestock.

The EU”s aid “will be used to
cover food needs, restoration of livelihoods and psychological support for the
vulnerable population,” the commission said in a statement.

The money is to
be administered by aid agencies and international organizations such as the
United Nations and the Red Cross and Red Crescent.
