
Activists` group “Lantuun dohio” (Лантуун дохио) launched a movement against human trafficking, holding their first photo exhibition “Movement against violation”, on Sunday May 5th in the Art House Center.
The exhibition by the “Brother’s and Sister`s Union”, “Princess center” and “Human Security Research Center” will be on display on May 5th-7th.
Human trafficking in Mongolia was first reported in 2000 when the case of two Mongolian women who were forced into prostitution in Yugoslavia for an attractive salary came to light.
The case was heard in Court in 2002. This was the first time a human trafficking crime was charged in Mongolia.
Since then human trafficking crime has been frequent in Mongolia. So the activist youth group has launched a month long campaign against human trafficking.
According to reports on human trafficking, almost 75 percent of women who were victims of such crimes were used as sex slaves and prostitutes.
Every minute eight people are trafficked internationally.
It is estimated that 0.7-2 million people are trafficked in the world; in European countries 120 thousand people are sold a year.
Reports say 38,054 children left Mongolia in 2007 but 1,509 of them did not arrived at their intended destination.
In recent years in Mongolia, 14 human trafficking cases and 82 victims have been registered. Almost 10 percent of these were under age and 50 percent were 18-21 years old.
