Prime Minister S.Batbold inaugurated
Wednesday’s conference of the National Council for Children, which he heads. He
regretted that despite much talk, there has been little progress in improving
the lot of children and felt it is “high time for the government to take
decisive measures to protect child rights and make real changes”.

He tasked the Ministry of Justice
to take immediate measures to protect children from violence and crime, and
asked city officials not to allow land near kindergartens, playing fields and
schools to be misused. He also urged the Council to quickly implement a policy
on a family-centered approach and to eradicate inequality between rural and
urban children. He also wanted officials to complete documentation of unregistered
children within this year and to focus on reaching social welfare to those
children most in need.

Participants at the
conference talked about adding sign language to children’s programs of TV. Some
proposed a special channel for children and special TV programs on sexual education
for girls and boys. Finally the conference adopted a medium-term strategy to
strengthen child protection and a work plan for 2011. The Prime Minister
reminded all in his closing speech that “the result is more important than adopting
a resolution” and asked officials to submit relevant documents to the government
for further action.
