The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) chapter in Bozeman is bringing a Mongolian group of officials to tour various overpasses and underpasses in Montana and other US sites that help animals cross traffic areas.

The tour includes major sites north of Missoula on US 93 within the Flathead Indian Reservation. The reservation has 41 wildlife crossing structures, according to a WCS news release.

The Mongolians are experiencing an increase in development that is already affecting migration routes of such animals as saiga antelope, Mongolian gazelles and khulan.

Also providing information will be officials from the Montana Department of Transportation, Western Transportation Institute at MSU in Bozeman, the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, the Craighead Institute and a number of New Mexico groups also involved in traffic-related problems with wildlife. They will see such projects as the Abo Canyon Railway Underpass in New Mexico, with exit ramps for Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep.

Another workshop is scheduled at the end of April in Mongolia.
