Almost 80 percent of the territory in Mongolia is covered by heavy snow. Local reports say that 48 sums in 12 aimags are experiencing severe conditions due to a combination of blizzards and bitter cold.  In the aimags were winter has hit worse there is 20-60 cm deep snow and in some places the snow depth is almost 60-130 cm.

If there is more snow fall further severe conditions are expected in 83 sums in 16 aimags.  According to a report on December 31st the snow depth became 20-60 cm and in some place 60-130 cm due to a snow storm and caused livestock to be unable to graze in Uvs, Khuvsgul, Uvurkhngai, Zavkhan, Bayankhongor, Govi-Altai, Arkhangai, Bulgan, Darkhan-Uul, Selenge, Tuv, Dornod, Sukhbaatar and Dundgovi aimags.

Not only pastures, but also local roads and mountain passes have been blocked by snow and medical and first aid resources cannot reach over 3000 herders in remote areas. Some hospitals in sums have only 2 or 3 days of drug resources left.

Due to such winter severe conditions the State Emergency Commission and the Government have taken measures to help herders by distributing fodder and hay from the State reserve fund and have given directions to the Governors of aimags.

According to local reports on January 2nd over 600 livestock diminished in the snow in Arkhangai, Khuvsgul and Govi-Sumber aimags.
