Parliament has discussed a new provision of law about the president during the plenary session meeting today.  The provision included a mention to run the presidential election using an automatic voting system and to establish polling stations to let Mongolians vote abroad only in the countries with Mongolian Consulates. The discussion also included adding particular articles about election campaigns for parties and coalitions and regulations regarding candidates if they break the law.

The new provision also noted the possibility to run presidential election voting from 07.00 am to 10.00 pm and the draft law makers are to focus on considering Mongolians who live abroad who are not able to vote in the election. Handicapped voters will be able to vote via portable poll boxes as usual.

The presidential election date has been delayed by one month from its usual date when it is held in May. The head of the General Election Committee, Ch.Sodnomtseren, said that the “General Election Committee used to organize the election on the set date in the year when parliament passed the election law. But this time the Presidential Election will be delayed by one month due to running an automatic voting system and the encryption of polling paper.

According to law, election law should be passed 6 months before the voting takes place, therefore the presidential election will happen next June.
